WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- A Wisconsin U.S Senator is asking for a second chance to sign up for Obamacare. Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin says there is a large number of Wisconsinites that are without health coverage of any kind right now.  “I am urging the Department of Health and Human Services to see this as a special circumstance, when we have that big of a gap in health care coverage, to provide an other opportunity for those individuals to enroll, and I want to work with the Governor to identify and communicate, and do outreach to them so they can have health insurance.”

Baldwin, like most Democrats, is critical of Governor Scott Walker for not accepting additional federal dollars to expand Medicaid, which she says would have funded these people through BadgerCare. “The 38,000 people that we are talking about all had BadgerCare, and BadgerCare would have been able to continue to cover these individuals had our Governor chosen to expand Medicaid coverage and accept federal funding.”

Baldwin says the large number of people without health coverage are there because they have no choice, and can’t afford care. She says being without coverage until next year is not acceptable. “These individuals have not successfully transitioned to other health care provided in the federal marketplace. We want an additional opportunity so that they don’t have to wait until next year.”

Baldwin disagrees with Governor Walker on this issue, but wants to work with him to identify the people in the gap and get them covered. The Senator sent a letter to the Department of Health and Human Services urging them to grant the special sign up period.
