NATIONAL HARBOR, MD -- The top speller in Wisconsin has been eliminated from the National Spelling Bee.
13-year-old Karelyn Malliet from Shawano made it through two of the on-stage spelling rounds, but didn’t do well enough off stage on a spelling and vocabulary test to make the final cut.
Karelyn successfully spelled “graupel” which describes granular snow pellets and “rhabdomancy” which describes divination by rods or wands.
Malliet won her school district spelling bee and the statewide one in Madison to advance to the National Bee.
ESPN will broadcast the final rounds live starting at 7:00 p.m. CDT Thursday. There is also an online list of surviving contestants at spellingbee.com.
