Scammers targeting vets and active duty service members this Memorial Day weekend

UNDATED (WSAU) -- It may be Memorial Day weekend, but scammers aren't taking a holiday.

Wisconsin Better Business Bureau says a number of new scams are targeting veterans and active service members in Wisconsin.

A major scam continues to be high priced loans for young military enlistees. Businesses claim that you're preapproved for a loan and qualified for military discounts, all of which end up to be padded with with massive fees and interest. Groups also target the families of servicemembers selling extremely high priced life insurance policies using high pressure sales tactics.

Groups have also been sending out phony letters about missed jury summons, telling the soldier that a warrant is now out for their arrest, but if you give the caller money or credit card information, it can be taken care of over the phone.

There are a number of tips to avoid these scams. While you're on duty, make sure that credit agencies know you're Active Duty and flag your account. That way anyone trying to use your account for a loan will need to get your permission to do so. You should also make sure you do your research, and never use wire transfers or money cards to do business with people you don't know.
