Survey worker critically injured after being struck by car in Brown County

BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) - A highway worker is fighting for his life after being struck by a car while doing survey work on the ramp from eastbound Highway 172 to northbound I-43 on Monday.

It happened around 11 a.m. while two private contractors were doing work for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. A 64-year-old man was taking measurements and walked into the traffic lane.

Brown County Sheriff's officials said he didn’t see a car coming over a hill. That’s when he was hit in the left hand lane. The man is currently in critical condition at a local hospital, but authorities expect him to survive.

Authorities said the 20-year-old man from the New Franken area was not able to avoid the worker. The driver was questioned by sheriff's deputies and then released. No word yet on if charges will be filed.

The survey work was being conducted by Omnni Associates, Appleton and the injured worker is employed by Omnni.

Officials with the DOT and Brown County Sheriff's Department encourage drivers to use caution and to remain alert while driving through work zones.
