Sheboygan County businessman unhappy with worst pollution ranking

SHEBOYGAN, WI (WTAQ) - A Sheboygan County business leader takes issue with a new finding that his county has some of the nation's worst ozone pollution.

The American Lung Association's annual "State of the Air" report rated Sheboygan the 25th worst county for ozone from 2010 through 2012.

The report said all 8 Wisconsin counties along Lake Michigan have too many days of excess ozone.

Steve Steinpreis of the Sheboygan County Chamber's advocacy committee says his area's numbers might not be accurate -- because the DNR recently moved the county's air quality monitor away from Lake Michigan. Therefore, Steinpreis tells the Sheboygan Press the true ozone figures are uncertain for now.

The lung association said north central Wisconsin had some of the nation's cleanest air, as shown by air monitors in bigger counties like Marathon and Ashland.

Linda Witucki of Wisconsin's Lung Association chapter said the air is certainly cleaner than it was 15 years ago -- but there's still work to do, because of the high ozone along Lake Michigan.
