Cards avoid broom, roll Brewers

by

St. Louis brought out the lumber against Milwaukee Wednesday afternoon and avoided a series sweep at Busch Stadium with a 9-3 victory.   The Cardinals raked a pair of home runs and six doubles against the tired and injured Brewer staff.  Allen Craig went 4 for 5 with a long ball and Matt Adams cracked a three run shot of starter and loser Matt Garza.   Garza gave up five runs in three plus innings before leaving the game early with a right thumb contusion.    Rule 5 draft pick Wei-Chung Wang came on and was roughed up for six hits and four runs in three innings.   Backup catcher Martin Maldanado even pitched a scoreless 8th for the Brewers.   Milwaukee's offense got after Shelby Miller early with Carlos Gomez hitting a solo home run and Mark Reynolds hit a two run blast that gave the Brewers a 3-2 lead but it was all downhill from there.  Still, Milwaukee took the series and capped the best opening month in franchise history with a 20-8 record, five and a half games in front of the Cardinals.  Next stop on the road trip is Cincinnati where they open a four game series at the Great American Ballpark Thursday night.   Marco Estrada will face Homer Bailey.  Pre-game coverage begins at 5:35 PM on WTAQ.
