The top ranked and unbeaten Kimberly Papermakers had been living on the edge throughout the WIAA State Tournament. A one point regional victory over De Pere, a one point win over undefeated Sheboygan North in the sectional semifinal and a two point victory over Arrowhead to reach the state semifinals at the Resch Center. Standing in the way of the 26-0 Papermakers from a shot at the title was the Knights of Oak Creek, a team Kimberly defeated during the regular season by yes, a single point. After falling behind during a cold shooting first half, the Papermakers rallied and led by five at 36-31 with only a minute left to go. Jenna Santi hit a three for Oak Creek. Jenna Smarzinski made one of two for Kimberly and Oak Creek's Katie Finn hit two free throws to make it 37-36 with :22 to play. Senior standout Frankie Wurtz made one of two free throws with :04 left to put Kimberly up 38-36. Needing a full court inbounds, Oak Creek got a break on a long pass that was deflected all the way to the far baseline, last touched by Kimberly. The Knights found Stephanie Kostowicz under the hoop who laid it in with :02 left to force overtime. From there, Oak Creek got a hoop from Tamya Sims to get in front and they held the lead with six free throws to win 46-40. The Knights improve to 25-2 on the season and now they, not the cardiac Kimberly kids, are on the brink of a state title.
