What goes around comes around. The first girls state high school basketball championship game played at the Resch Center last march pitted Wisconsin Rapids Assumption and Barneveld. The Royals won that Division 5 title 39-35. Barneveld only wanted another chance. The Golden Eagles ran through the season and tournament undefeated, including a regular season victory over Assumption . They got back to the title game by beating Owen-Withee on Thursday and standing in their way for the championship, was Assumption. The Royals led most of the way but Barneveld finishing strong for a 38-34 final, earning the Golden Eagles their 5th state championship in school history and first since 2005. Rachel Slaney's laup put Barneveld on top with 1:46 to play and they stretched the lead to 6. Assumption wouldn't concede and Barneveld helped by missing four consecutive free throws down the stretch, but after a turnover, Slaney was fouled with :01 left and made a pair for the final margin. She finished with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Barveneld capped a perfect 28-0 season with the title. Assumption was led by Mary Sigler with 10 and finished the year 26-3. A year ago, Assumption took gold, Barneveld silver, they swapped trophies and medals today.
