The Barneveld Golden Eagles are a win away from a perfect season. The state's top ranked team in Division 5 rolled to the championship game with a 71-53 victory over Owen-Withee in the semifinals this afternoon at the Resch Center. Barneveld (27-0) jumped out to a 20-7 lead after the first quarter and never let up. The Golden Eagles led by as many as 28 before the Owen-Withee reserves cut the margin in the closing minutes. Hannah Whitish topped the Eagles with 19, Rachel Slaney had 15 and McKenzie Sporle added 10. The BlackHawks were led by Stephany Heggemeier with 21 points and finished their season at 22-6. Barneveld has 4 state titles to it's credit, including back to back undefeated championship seasons in 1998 and 1999. The team was coached then as now by Jim Myers who said he hasn't given the perfect record much thought this season. He only wanted his girls to play in the final game of the season and they'll get that chance, against Wisconsin Rapids Assumption, the team that defeated Myers' Golden Eagles in the title game last year 39-35. These teams met earlier this year with Barneveld winning 50-37.
