Legislator proposes standards, licensing for coroners

UNDATED (WSAU) -- Wisconsin’s coroners and medical examiners may have to meet standards and be licensed in the future.

Wisconsin is one of the few states that does not yet require specific training for the people that conduct death investigations. State Representative Chad Weininger believes that lack of training endangers police investigations, and could literally allow someone to get away with murder.

There are some suspicious death cases that may have been caused by someone, but no charges were made because potential evidence was either mishandled or destroyed during handling of the body.

Right now, anyone can be elected coroner regardless of their background. Weininger has drafted legislation that would require the people doing death investigations to be qualified and licensed.
