Tomah man off city council, out of mayor's race

by

TOMAH, Wis. (WSAU) -- A Tomah man is now off the city council and out of the mayor’s race.

Candidate Leroy Kelsey resigned from the city council this past weekend, and took down all of his campaign signs in his bid to become mayor. Why? Kelsey has a felony conviction on his record.

Online court records for Wisconsin don’t show any felony convictions, only a record of his divorce. Monroe County’s District Attorney’s office is investigating if Kelsey committed any crimes by signing declaration of candidacy documents for both the city council and for the mayor’s race.

Kelsey’s name will still be on the April 1st ballot, but he cannot actively campaign. If Kelsey were to win the spring election, he would probably not be sworn into office because of the past felony.

Kelsey was convicted of taking nearly $7,000 from the American Legion in Sparta back in 1990.
