The WIAA Boys State High School Basketball tournament is down to sectional finals and by Saturday night, the field of 20 teams in five divisions will be making reservations at the Kohl Center. In semifinal action Thursday night, the Kimberly Papermakers knocked off the top seeded Bay Port Pirates 46-41 in the Division 1 matchup in Manitowoc. Kimberly made big shots late, none bigger than a three point bucket from Austin Weyenberg with 1:36 to play that put the Papermakers on top for good. Kimberly, a three seed, will meet two time defending champion Germantown in the final Saturday afternoon at 2:00 PM at Ashwaubenon High School.
In Division 2, the West De Pere Phantoms avenged two regular season losses to top seeded Seymour by beating the Thunder 60-50 behind 19 points each from Chandler Diekvoss and Cody Schwartz. West De Pere will need to beat Port Washington tomorrow in Manitowoc to earn their first trip to state since 1933. Rhinelander knocked out Shawano in another semifinal 45-32.
Two area teams will vie for the Division 3 tournament field. Little Chute defeated Tommahawk 58-44. The Mustangs will take on top ranked Manitowoc Roncalli which beat Valders 54-37. That game will be played in Menasha at 1:00 PM.
Brillion is still alive in Division 4 after beating Shiocton 52-31. The Lions will face 24-1 Auburndale at Appleton East at 2:00 PM. Oshkosh Lourdes also advanced with a 58-36 victory over Lake Country Lutheran. The Knights will have to dethrone two time defending champion Dominican in the sectional final to move on.
The top ranked team in the state in Division 5 had a tough matchup but NEW Lutheran made it 23 straight victories beating Wausaukee 63-58. The Blazers will play Newman Catholic of Wausau in the sectional final at Pulaski High School at 2:00 PM Saturday.
