Spike Jonze Wins Best Original Screenplay Oscar for 'Her'

By Julia Emmanuele, Hollywood Staff

Spike Jonze won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for his film Her, which he also directed. The film, which is set in the near future, chronicles the relationship between the lonely, hopeless romantic Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Pheonix) and his artificially intelligent operating system, Samantha (voiced by Scarlett Johansson), and explores the idea of inter-personal (or inter-system) relationships and the ways people process the people and world around them. Jonze has proven himself to be somewhat of a lucky charm this year, as two other films he was involved with - The Wolf of Wall Street, in which he had a small role as a broker, and Bad Grandpa, which he produced - are also up for Oscars.

Although he seemed somewhat flustered by the win, Jonze managed to thank his friends and family, many of whom were present to watch him accept the Oscar, even pointing out which of his colleagues were laughing and which were crying. He also said that they had set out to make a film about relationships and intimacy, and that it was something all of them shared, before wrapping up his speech.

Congratulations to Her, one of our favorites!
