USDA: Wisconsin farmers plant record amount of soybeans, more corn

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin farmers planted a record amount of soybeans this year.

They also planted more corn, bucking the national trend of a decrease.

The USDA said Monday that farmers in the Badger State planted 4.2 million acres of corn this spring. That's 100,000 more acres than a year ago, and it's the nation's 7th-highest corn crop.

Soybean acreage totaled 1.8 million in Wisconsin, way up from the 1.58 million acres planted in 2013.

Nationally, farmers planted a record amount of soybeans, with almost 85 million acres. That's 11 percent more than last year.

Analysts had expected some farmers to devote more of their acres to soybeans, due to a drop in corn prices.

The U.S. corn crop of 92 million acres is down 4 percent from the previous year -- but it's still the 5th-largest corn total planted since 1944.
