Duffy amendment to fund Hunger and Homelessness effort passes House

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WSAU) -- The House of Representatives supports a proposal that would help pay for hunger and homeless issues in rural America. The House unanimously passed Representative Sean Duffy’s amendment to the Transportation, Housing & Urban Development Appropriations Bill by unanimous vote on Tuesday. Rep. Duffy proposal will put $10 million in the Rural Housing Stability Assistance program, which was created in 2009, but never received funding.

Duffy says one thing this program provides is help for people that are in risk of becoming homeless, but are not currently on the streets.  “But so often, the rural parts of America are forgotten. And I have to tell you coming from rural America, the pain of poverty is just as great, and it affects our communities in rural America like in urban America.”

This amendment proposal blossomed from Rep. Duffy’s 2013 Hunger and Homelessness campaign, which focused on helping the hungry and homeless, and preventing it in the rural 7th District.   “We had a conversation about what we could do better out of Washington to help them address the pain of this poverty in our community. In regard to the homelessness and the homeless shelters, their main point was they need flexibility so that they can address the risks of homelessness in our community.”

Duffy says poverty is different in rural America. “Instead of having families move out onto the street, often time we see neighbors, 2 or 3 families, moving into a single bedroom apartment so they can give their kids shelter.”
