MENASHA, WI (WTAQ) - The city of Menasha has agreed to sell the old River Street Power Plant to a Port Edwards-based food processor.
Simply Incredible Foods plans to use the building to make cranberry juice and sweet frozen cranberries. The company has a patent on its process for sweetening the berries without adding sugar.
For over 50 years, the city-owned power plant provided power to residents. Then it became a steam plant a decade ago, but that operation cost taxpayers millions of dollars. So the city shut it down five years ago. It cost the city $70,000 a year to maintain the vacant site.
City officials say Simply Incredible Foods paid $1 to buy the building, but took responsibility for several improvements in order to make it suitable for food processing.
According to area business leaders, the facility could bring approximately 80 new jobs to the city.
