Horse mistreatment trial enters second day

by

WAUPACA, Wis. (WSAU) -- The second day of a trial is underway for a woman accused of mistreating and failing to care for horses. 72-year-old Barbara Thiry of Clintonville is charged with 15 misdemeanors related to five horses that died on her property in Kewaunee County prior to 2010, when she moved. Court documents claim they were not properly fed, watered, or sheltered and had poor general health and dental care.

The purchaser of Thiry’s farm found some of the horse heads in the house, and found carcasses while removing deep piles of manure in the barn. The house had to be torn down because of it’s filthy condition.

The jury was selected by mid morning Wednesday. The court accepted several photographs as evidence plus heard testimony from four witnesses before the end of the day.

The trial will resume at 8:30 a.m. Thursday before Judge Raymond Huber.  The trial is expected to last three days.
