Gypsy Moth spraying finished for 2014

UNDATED (WSAU) -- Wisconsin is finished with Gypsy Moth spraying for this year. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection says they completed this year’s target areas for spraying pheromones to disrupt their reproduction this past Friday, when they completed spraying in Douglas and Rusk counties.

This year’s spraying efforts were focused in the western and northwestern areas of the state.

The Gypsy Moth was brought to America in 1869 by Etienne Leopold Trouvelot, who hoped to breed them with silkworms to produce a hardier species. Some of the moths escaped, and have slowly spread westward ever since.

More information about the Wisconsin Gypsy Moth control program is available online.
