Supreme Court rules on OWI sentence challenge

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- The State Supreme Court ruled on a case involving a drunk driving conviction and the sentence that was given. Monroe County Judge J. David Rice had sentenced Clayton Williams of Warrens to three years in prison plus three years on extended supervision for his 7th OWI conviction back in 2011.

The judge referred to the statutory guidelines for 7th, 8th, and 9th OWI sentencing as “murky” but believed they required him to impose a minimum sentence. Williams won an appeal, but the Supreme Court ruled 7-0 Tuesday in favor of Judge Rice’s ruling, saying the statutes are ambiguous but their history shows they were meant to impose mandatory minimum prison times.
