Get Amber Alerts on your Twitter with new program from Department of Justice

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- State justice officials say there's a new tool for helping to return endangered children to safety in the state.

You can now get Amber Alerts over Twitter. Susan Whitehorse with the Department of Justice says they are putting more work into using digital media to get out the message on alerts. "Our broadcasters, we have our transportation message boards, outdoor digital billboards, twitter, facebook. We're utilizing technology as best as we can to rapidly disseminate information to the public."

Whitehorse says the diverse approach to releasing those alerts improves the chance of recovery. "The eyes and ears now have been expanded when a child has been abducted. They'll be able to enlist more people, the public, statewide and nationwide, to help bring children home."

The new Twitter account is @AmberAlert and is a nationwide service. "You will see everything from around the entire country. You'll see the activation and also about the cancellation as well." Whitehorse says that helps get alerts from neighboring states to Wisconsin residents to help find kids more quickly.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, more than 600 children have been rescued since the AMBER Alert program’s creation in 1996.
