Exploding toilets prompt plumbing product recall

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WSAU) -- Imagine your toilet making a loud noise, and flooding your bathroom. It has happened, and it’s prompting a product recall.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission Thursday expanded a recall of the Series 503 Flushmate 111 Pressure Assist flushing systems installed in toilet tanks between March of 2008 and June of 2009. The Commission says the pressure tank seam can burst with enough force to shatter the toilet tank. There was a similar recall for earlier systems made beginning in October 1997.

Flushmate is a division of Sloan Valve Company. The manufacturer says the first six characters of the serial number are the date code. The units were commonly sold at Home Depot and Lowe's stores, toilet manufacturers, distributors and plumbing contractors nationwide for about $108.

The CPSC says consumers should immediately stop using the recalled Flushmate III system, turn off the water supply to the unit, flush the toilet to release the internal pressure and contact the firm to request a free repair kit.
