UNDATED (WSAU) -- Tax season is approaching, and the IRS says you can get a jumpstart on your preparations.

IRS Wisconsin spokesperson Christopher Miller says low income residents have the option to get free electronic filing from the IRS.gov website. "On the right hand side, you choose free file. You get to choose of 15 software providers that will allow you to use their band name software for free!" Nearly 70 thousand people used free file last year in Wisconsin.

Miller says there's free help available offline as well. "We encourage anyone who feels that they'd like a little bit of face to face help to try volunteer sites around their community."

The fastest way to get your refund is by combining IRS E-file with direct deposit. Using this option, most taxpayers can get their tax returns within 21 days of filing.
