Bill to send some 17-year-olds back into juvenile system getting support from law enforcement

by

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- A bill that would send non-violent 17 year old offenders back into the juvenile justice system is getting support in from law enforcement and state government.

The bill is authored by Senator Jerry Petrowski, and would keep first-time nonviolent 17-year-olds offenders out of the adult justice system. Wisconsin is currently only one of 10 states that still automatically sends 17-year-olds into the adult system.

Petrowski and proponents of the bill say keeping teenagers out of the adult system reduced the chance they'll reoffend in the future, and helps get them the treatment and rehabilitation they need to get them back into society.

The bill is seeing support from local sheriffs, as well former Governors Doyle and Thompson.
