Vinehout will not run for governor

UNDATED (WSAU-Wheeler News)  It appears that Democrat Mary Burke will not have to win a primary before she challenges Republican Governor Scott Walker this fall. State Senate Democrat Kathleen Vinehout of Alma reportedly told the head of the Madison teachers' union she will not run for governor. John Matthews then alerted other union activists -- and newspapers in Madison and Milwaukee received copies of that e-mail.

Vinehout is reportedly expected to announce her intentions today.

She's recovering from a broken arm suffered in a snow-related traffic crash on Interstate-94 in Racine County last month, while she was testing the waters for a possible gubernatorial bid.

Vinehout, a senator from Alma, ran unsuccessfully for governor in the 2012 Democratic primary for Scott Walker's recall election. Her apparent decision gives Mary Burke a clear path to the Democratic nomination -- something party leaders were hoping for, so she wouldn't have to use up her cash in a primary battle and deplete her resources against the well-funded Walker. Burke, a former state Commerce Secretary and Trek Bicycle executive, announced her candidacy in October.
