Officials plan to rebuild addition to nursing home after big fire

GLENWOOD CITY, WI (WTAQ) - Nursing home officials in Glenwood City plan to rebuild an addition that was heavily damaged by fire Tuesday while it was still under construction.

No one was hurt when a $9.3 million expansion of the Glenhaven Nursing Home was ignited. There's no word on what caused it.

The 32 nursing home residents were not evacuated from the existing structure, but they were moved to a location further away from the fire.

Home administrator David Prissel said the blaze was a huge setback, especially considering the project's importance to the community. Construction began last May on the 50,000 square foot addition, and it was scheduled to be ready in June as an assisted living center.

Fire officials said water had to be hauled in from nearby Boyceville, because Glenwood City's water system could not keep up with the demand. Also, responses from around 30 area fire departments were slowed by Tuesday's 8 to 9 inches of snow in the region.

Glenwood City Mayor John Larson tells the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram the expansion was pretty much engulfed in flames when he first saw it.  He said he's grateful that nobody got hurt.
