GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The sagging Leo Frigo Memorial Bridge will reopen earlier than first thought on Sunday.

The bridge, which carries I-43 over the Fox River, will open 12 days ahead of schedule after five support piers that were corroded to various degrees were repaired.

Governor Scott Walker announced the re-opening Friday at a news conference. He said the bridge would re-open at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, about six hours before the Green Bay Packers start playing the San Francisco 49'ers in an NFC playoff game.

Walker said he was pleased the project was done ahead of schedule -- not only because of the playoff game, but just in general. He called the Frigo Bridge an important link in northeast Wisconsin, as well as for the entire state.

The bridge was closed last September 25th, after one of the 51 support piers sank and caused a large dip in the pavement. Crews have been working around the clock to complete the repairs, which began in November.

The total cost has not been finalized, but it's expected to be in the neighborhood of $20 million. Federal funds will cover most of it.

Zenith Tech of Waukesha did the repair work. The state is paying the company a $750,000 bonus for finishing the project nearly two weeks early.
