Winter storm leaves snow, ice behind

UNDATED (WSAU-Wheeler News)  Wisconsin is getting pounded in different ways by the latest winter storm that rolled in yesterday afternoon. Up to nine-inches of snow fell by midnight in the far northwest. Forecasters still expect 15-to-18 inches for that region by the time the storm clears out this afternoon.

Southern Wisconsin's been getting the worst of the high winds, with gusts of 61 miles-an-hour at Mayville in Dodge County and 54 at Kenosha. Trees were blown down in parts of Racine and Washington counties. Parts of the south also had thunderstorms and pea-sized hail early last evening. That's after freezing rain made things icy earlier in the day.

The state's mid-section seems to be getting a mix of everything -- freezing rain, sleet, high winds, and finally a fresh coating of snow. Arcadia and Independence had four inches as of mid-evening.

Eau Claire had close to seven-inches by midnight. A partial roof collapse and a gas leak was reported at a K-Mart that was open in Eau Claire. Nobody was hurt.

Far north central areas did not get as much snow. Boulder Junction had around five inches just after 10 last evening. More snow and strong winds are in the forecast this morning. The National Weather Service generally has warnings and advisories out through noon for most of the state.

Quiet and colder weather is expected tonight and through the weekend. Parts of the north could get close to 10-below again by early Sunday.
