Assembly committee delays vote on school accountability bill

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - A Wisconsin Assembly committee delayed a vote Thursday on a bill to close public schools that fail to make the grade.

The Republican measure was up for a vote in the Education Committee -- but chairman Steve Kestell says changes are being considered, and the package won't be ready to advance this week.

The bill's chief author, Kaukauna Republican Jim Steineke, says talks continue with the state Senate to find something which both houses can pass. For now, Senate GOP leader Scott Fitzgerald says he only sees support in his chamber for the bill the upper house approved this week.

It calls for private schools which get state tax money to report their performance data to the state, and to be graded just like public schools are.

The Assembly package would shut down schools that get failing grades -- and remove low performing private schools from the voucher program to teach low income kids.
