FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WSAU) -- The 2014 sturgeon spearing season on Lake Winnebago is over. Department of Natural Resources officials say the spearers of the large, prehistoric fish had harvested 90% of the anticipated quota of female fish by Wednesday, so Thursday was the end of the season.
The six- day season tied for the third shortest season since 2002.
As of Wednesday, the largest sturgeon caught this year was a 161-pound, 77-inch monster. As of Wednesday, 99 fish exceeding 100 pounds had been registered.
