MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- The company planning to open an iron ore mine in northern Wisconsin has passed another regulatory hurdle.
The Department of Natural Resources has approved a stormwater permit for Gogebic Taconite's plans for bulk sampling at the site. This is not full scale operation, but a larger scale test of what sort of iron ore is available at the site and where they need to place the mine in the future.
The company is also asking the DNR for an application to improve a number of roads leading to the site. Officials say G-Tac wants to upgrade two roads to the site to allow heavier traffic in the summer. They've submitted a stormwater permit application for that as well.
G-Tac is hoping to start sampling in a few weeks.
