MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- State wardens say now is the time to get into a hunters safety course.

The Department of Natural Resources wants you to try and get in your safety training early this year. "A whole bunch of people are trying to get into those classes in the Mid-Fall and there just isn't enough room for them." Recreational safety warden Bill Yearman says the winter is the best time to do just that.

Yearman says if you want to get a hunting license, you likely need to pass a safety course. "If you were born after January 1st, 1973, you need a hunters safety course to hunt anything in the state of Wisconsin."

Yearman says you'll pick up the lessons you need to be safe in the woods. "We emphasise handling any type of firearm or bow or crossbow safely at all times, but we integrate that into various types of hunting and how safety relates to those types of hunting." That includes the basics of firearm handling: always treat your gun as if it's loaded, be sure of your target and beyond, keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, and keep your finger off the trigger unless you're ready to shoot.

Hunter safety courses are run throughout most of the year. To find a course in your area, log on to the DNR's website at http://dnr.wi.gov and search for Safety Education.
