WMC goes against Republicans on Common Core issue

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - It's not often when you hear that Wisconsin's largest business group goes against Republicans on a major issue.

But Monday, the Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce distanced itself from Governor Scott Walker and the GOP on the Common Core educational standards.

Walker recently told state educators he wants a council to review the three-year-old standards and suggest changes.

Jim Morgan, the WMC's head of education, said Common Core has, "given local communities a common purpose -- the states a common goal -- and our country a tool to ensure our long-term success."

The state Department of Public Instruction said it welcomed the support from the Wisconsin chamber. The DPI said the sentiment represents those of educators and other business leaders that overwhelmingly support, "the college and career ready standards we have adopted."

Wisconsin was among the first of 45 states taking part.

Critics fear that Common Core will lead the way to a national education system. Walker recently said he wants something that meets Wisconsin's unique needs.
