GRAND CHUTE, WI (WTAQ) - A mysterious natural gas leak that lasted for nearly a day-and-a-half has been stopped in Grand Chute.

We Energies crews Tuesday afternoon located and fixed the leak in the area of W. College Ave. and S. Kools St.

The leak, first reported around 6 a.m. Monday, forced six businesses nearby to close. They were allowed to reopen Tuesday evening.

However, traffic in that area will be impacted until Wednesday.

“The people that were involved in getting this under control, many of them had 20-30 years in the business and they looked at all of the circumstances and what they dealt with…it was one battle after another,” We Energies spokesperson Brian Manthey told FOX 11.

Part of the issue with this repair was the conditions workers found underneath the road.

“There is an awful lot of frost and that is like digging into concrete rather than dirt,” said Manthey. “It’s also an intersection where a lot of utilities come together, water, sewer, fiber optics and so we have to be very careful, do a lot of hand digging.”
