West finally a winner

The Green Bay West Wildcats defeated arch rival Green Bay East 30-29 in the 109th meeting between the schools to end Wisconsin's longest high school football losing streak at 45 games Thursday night at Del Marcelle Stadium.  The Wildcats last win also came against East in the 2009 season opener.  East jumped to the lead with quarterback Chris Frelich dashed 62 yards for a touchdown on their first offensive snap of the year.   Converting three straight fourth downs, West answered with 4th down 9 yard pass from Brett Dejardin to Logan Cropsey.  The extra point missed and would force the Wildcats to go for two the rest of the night.  West grabbed it's first lead late in the third quarter at 22-21 but the Red Devils running back Noah Delzer scored his third rushing touchdown to make it 29-22.  Cropsey's second TD catch and a two point run from Jonathan Day moved West back in front for good.  The Wildcats needed to break up a Red Devil hail mary pass on the final play to secure the first career win for head coach Jeff Behrendt.   Fans stormed the field to celebrate the end of the long drought.   East still leads the all-time series which began in 1905 with 57 victories, West now has 49 and three games ended in a tie.
