APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - Appleton's police chief is retiring due to a medical condition.
In a letter written to Mayor Tim Hanna, Chief Pete Helein said, "My decision was prompted by a medical condition that has recently been confirmed. After consultation with my family, I have decided that it would be best if I retire.”
Helein, who's been the police chief since 2012, will work through September 5. He's worked for the Appleton Police Department for 31 years.
Officials say the city's Police and Fire Commission will appoint an interim chief and start the search for a new chief in the coming weeks.
