Jury trial over in horse neglect case

by

WAUPACA, Wis. (WSAU) -- The trial is over for the woman accused of failing to care for five horses. 72-year-old Barbara Thiry of Clintonville was charged with 15 misdemeanors for not providing feed, water, or shelter to five horses that died on her property.

The court threw out two of the charges, and references to improper shelter were dismissed.

The Waupaca County jury got the case Thursday afternoon, and delivered a verdict Friday morning. They found Thiry not guilty on all remaining charges except one. She was found guilty of intentionally failing to provide food for an animal.

Thiry was sentenced immediately after the trial to a year of probation, court costs, and restrictions including that she can only have up to two horses, and only if deemed appropriate by the probation agent. If she does eventually get more horses, Thiry will have to provide the court with regular reports from the ferrier and the veterinarian. Thiry will also have to undergo counseling.
