Gov. Walker pledges to find new ways to pay for Wisconsin highways

JANESVILLE, WI (WTAQ) - Governor Scott Walker has reiterated his pledge to find new ways to pay for new highways in Wisconsin.

The governor was in Janesville Tuesday, where the board of the state's Economic Development Corporation met.

He told reporters that a project to expand Interstate 90 from Madison to the Illinois border is still a priority. But Transportation Secretary Mark Gottlieb said it might have to be delayed, if funding is not found soon to cover a deficit in the state's transportation fund that's expected to reach $700 million by 2017.

A good share of that fund is provided by gasoline tax revenues. Walker calls that unsustainable, because vehicles are getting more fuel efficient.

Independent surveys have also shown that Wisconsinites are driving less. The Republican governor said tax reforms would be needed to keep the DOT and its major road work going.
