DNR releases fall hunting report, outlook good for deer hunt

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) - State officials have released their annual fall hunting forecast, and big game experts are expecting a good harvest for whitetail deer.

Big game specialist Kevin Wallenfang says he's hopeful for an excellent hunt this year. "In the big picture of things, we should have more deer out there, and we're hoping for a very good season." He says this spring's rains have helped the deer population rebound, along with some better deer management techniques.

That said, there could be a slow start to the gun deer season. Wallenfang says a number of factors might lead to a slow opening weekend that don't relate to the forecast owing to the late start this year. "The rut is going to be over, we won't see as much of that buck activity. There's also the Packer influence this year. They play at noon on Sunday and they play the Vikings, so that's going to pull people out of the woods."

Wallenfang says early bowhunters should be out in the woods right now. "Hit em early and hit em as hard as you can, and then get back out there when the rut kicks in."
