MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - The chancellor at UW-Whitewater will serve as the interim president of Wisconsin's 26 campus university system while a permanent leader is sought.
Richard Telfer was named Wednesday by the system's Board of Regents.
He has been at Whitewater since 1985. Telfer started as an assistant professor and later became the provost, vice chancellor, and associate vice chancellor. He also headed the school's department of curriculum and instruction, and was an assistant dean at the UWW graduate school.
Telfer has been Whitewater's chancellor since 2008.
He'll become the acting UW System president when Kevin Reilly leaves at the end of the year.
Current plans call for the Regents to name Reilly's permanent replacement in January. A search committee will start reviewing applications next month.
While Telfer is away from Whitewater, provost and vice chancellor Beverly Kopper will serve as the school's temporary leader. She's been Whitewater's provost since March of 2010, after serving as an associate provost at Northern Iowa.
