GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - A former staff member and graduate of West De Pere High School has been charged with two counts of sexual assault involving a 16-year-old student at the school.
20-year-old Adam Mathewson helped with the school’s marching band over the summer and volunteered twice a week into the fall.
The mother of the victim became concerned after her daughter didn’t return home after the homecoming football game on September 27 and again last weekend.
A note in a date book led authorities to Mathewson.
According to the criminal complaint, Mathewson admitted to having sexual contact with the teenage victim on two separate occasions at his apartment.
The West De Pere School District released a statement Wednesday.
“The District places the safety of our students at the highest level of priority. In this instance, the District followed all protocols prior to hiring Mr. Mathewson for this limited term position, including the District's standard background check process.”
Mathewson appeared in Brown County court Wednesday afternoon. He is charged with two felonies involving sexual assault of a student by school staff.
The court commissioner set bond at $2,000 cash.
