The 41st WIAA State Girls Volleyball Tournament opened at the Resch Center in Green Bay Thursday night with four, Division 1 quarterfinal matches. The best game on opening day was between Appleton North and Sun Prairie. The Lightning surprised the favored Cardinals with hustle in winning the first two sets 25-23 and 25-20. Sun Prairie stormed back however, to take the next three sets, 25-18, dominating the fourth 25-13 and holding off one last Lightning rally in the decisive set 15-13. The Cardinals led 12-7 before North put up one last fight. Emily Chaussee finished the match with her 22nd kill to put Sun Prairie into the semifinals. They will meet D1 favorite Menomonee Falls, a 3-1 winner over Pius XI. The Indians were led by Penn State recruit Simonoe Lee with 21 kills. In the other bracket, Neenah swept past Wausau East 19, 14 and 15 to improve to 42-4 on the season. The Lady Rockets will play Westosha Central a 3-1 winner over Muskego in it's state record 19th tournament appearance. Semifinals in all four Divisions are today, beginning with Division 4 at 10:00 AM, featuring Hilbert against Wausau Newman Catholic and Clayton against North Crawford. At 1, it's the Division 3 semi's featuring Auburndale against Racine St. Catherine's which knocked out two time defending champ Oostburg in the sectional finals, along with Eau Claire Regis against Brodhead. At 4:00 PM, the Division 2 teams take to the floor. Oconto Falls will go against unbeaten East Troy, ranked 4th nationally, with Altoona taking on Madison Edgewood. The Division 1 semifinals begin at 7:00 PM and the championship matches will take place Saturday.
