Hearing Thursday on proposed mine site restrictions

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- There will be a public hearing Thursday on state legislation that would restrict public access to the forest land near the proposed Gogebic mining site in northern Wisconsin.

This bill proposes limiting access in the managed forest land near the actual mining site. The State Senate has already passed the bill. The Assembly’s Forestry Committee will hear testimony at the capitol.

If the bill gets committee approval, it could scheduled for a vote by the full Assembly. That committee vote could happen right after the public hearing.

This bill would establish a six-hundred foot restricted zone around all mining equipment and access roads. Proponents say it would increase safety for both mine workers and the general public, including protesters.
