74-unit Allouez apartment fire under control, 3 firefighters injured

ALLOUEZ, WI (WTAQ) - Green Bay Metro Fire Department along with the assistance of 21 other area fire departments are starting to get a massive fire at a 74-unit apartment building in Allouez under control.

A call about a fire in the basement came in around 11:30 a.m. to Hilltop Place Apartments.

Fire Department Lt. Nick Craig says they were able to get all the residents out safely.

Three firefighters suffered minor injuries and were hospitalized as a precaution.

Craig says the fire spread in the older building because it did not have an interior sprinkler system or fire partition walls to prevent a fire from spreading. Once the fire got into the shared attic space, numerous units caught fire.

The fire was mostly contained to the center of the building that is over a block long.

To prevent the fire from spreading, crews did what’s called trench cutting, which essentially cut the building into three sections.  Firefighters then sprayed large amounts of water in between the spaces to prevent the fire from jumping to the other areas.

Village construction crews were brought in to tear down walls so firefighters could better hit the fire with water.

Crews will likely be on the scene well into the night and possibly the morning putting out hot spots.

Craig said they changed tactics towards a defensive strategy and began tackling the fire from the outside only.

Concerns were also being raised about the Allouez water supply.  So some fire crews detached from hydrants and starting using tanker trucks instead.

The American Red Cross is on scene to help residents find shelter for the night and provide them with other amenities.  A temporary shelter was set up at Langlade Elementary School located at 400 Broadview in the Village of Allouez.

It' not known how many people are displaced because of the fire.

Fox 11 reported that the Red Cross says 107 people were displaced.  71 of the 74 units were occupied.
