California, Nevada to thank for faster rising Powerball jackpots

UNDATED, WI (WTAQ) - If you win Satruday's $600-million Powerball jackpot, you can partially thank folks in California and Nevada.

It was only last month when California joined Wisconsin and 41 other states in playing Powerball.

Since then, the Golden State has accounted for 11-percent of Powerball ticket sales around the country – and it’s one reason the jackpots are rising faster than ever.

So what does Nevada have to do with this?

Well, California’s largest ticket-seller is a store in Nipton, close to the Nevada state line.

Nevada does not have its own lottery, because of all the casinos it has.

Las Vegas, the largest city in Nevada, is only 35 miles from Nipton – easy commuting distance to buy a chance at millions.

It’s not much of a chance, though.

The odds of winning the jackpot are 175-million to one.

Still, Powerball tickets are flying off store shelves – so many that the jackpot rose by $75-million since Wednesday night.

Saturday night’s top prize is the third-largest in U-S lottery history. The cash option for is just over 350-million. Tonight’s Mega Millions jackpot is nothing to sneeze at, either. It’s at 190-million-dollars.
