JFC votes to add 61 new workers to Revenue Department

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsinites who owe back taxes could be one step closer to getting caught.

The state Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee voted unanimously Wednesday morning to add 61 new people in the Revenue Department.

15 of those people would track down those who are delinquent in their state taxes.

The Legislative Fiscal Bureau estimates that almost $20 million additional dollars would be brought in during the next two years. That sounds like a lot – but it’s not much, considering that almost $1 billion in delinquent taxes are owed to the state.

Senate Republican Glenn Grothman of West Bend said he was conflicted in voting for the extra tax collectors. He said, “Sometimes these guys are unnecessarily mean and heartless.”

The revenue agency did not immediately comment.

Earlier Wednesday, Assembly Republican Steve Nass of Whitewater said he was against adding the extra revenue personnel.

Nass said the budget measure included expanded powers to access numerous state databases. He said it’s the last thing the state needs, in light of the IRS scandal involving the agency’s investigations into Tea Party groups that applied for tax-exempt status.
