Oak Creek cops to be honored for response to Sikh Temple shooting

WASHINGTON D.C. (WTAQ) - Eight Oak Creek police officers will get a major award this weekend.

The National Association of Police Organizations will recognize the entire morning shift that responded to the Sikh Temple, when gunman Wade Michael Page opened fire there last August and killed six worshippers.

Oak Creek lieutenant Brian Murphy has received much acclaim for luring Page out of the temple, while being shot 15 times. Murphy tells WISN-TV in Milwaukee that the latest honor is very special, because his entire shift will be recognized.

Sergeant Dean Kleinhans said everybody came together and worked as a team – and for that, they’ll get the “Top Cop” award from the national police group.

The officers plan to meet with President Obama at the White House on Saturday, before receiving their award on Sunday evening.

The recognition is part of the ceremonies for National Police Week, which also honors those who died in the line of duty.
