Tougher OWI laws being drafted

MADISON (WRN-WSAU)  A state lawmaker wants to create tougher penalties for drunk drivers.

State Representative Jim Ott (R-Mequon) is working on at least six bills aimed at strengthening Wisconsin's O-W-I laws. Those changes would include criminalizing a first offense if the driver's blood alcohol level is above .14, allowing judges to seize a vehicle after a third offense, and requiring first time offenders to actually appear in court.

Other bills would make third offense O-W-I a felony and require mandatory sentences for injuring or killing someone while driving drunk.

Ott says the changes are needed because drunk driving remains a major problem in the state. He hopes to hold hearings on the bills later this summer.
