(WNFL 1440AM - Green Bay, WI  - Jason Miller) - It’s been rumored today that Stan Van Gundy is the leading candidate to be the next head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks.  So I thought to myself, self, why would they go after Stan Van Gundy, and here is my answer.  It hasn’t been since George Karl that the Milwaukee Bucks have had a coach with the credentials of Stan Van Gundy.

Okay you’re going to say that Scott Skiles was good in Chicago…seriously, Scott Skiles made it to the playoffs, 6 seasons out of 13, with the best result, a Conference semi-final loss while in Chicago and one 1st round loss in Milwaukee.

You need more evidence, okay here it goes…George Karl while in Milwaukee put together a record of 205 – 173.  Skiles, 162 – 182.  Karl missed the playoffs one year while coach of the Bucks…Skiles only made the playoffs one year while in Milwaukee.  You are going to tell me that Karl had better talent than Skiles?  I will say ok, with a ya-but.

Karl had, Ray Allen, Glen Robinson, and Sam Cassell as his nucleus.  Skiles had Jennings, Ellis, and Sanders at his nucleus.  Both having pretty good scores, defenders, but one thing Karl didn’t have that Skiles had was a guy in Sanders that could block shots on a consistent basis.

So what made the Karl Bucks better than the Skiles Bucks…coaching, period end of the story.  You were always sure that a George Karl team was going to play ok defense but put up like 200 shots a night and they would just out score their opponents.  Skiles, was supposed to be a defensive genius, more like a dunce.  Look I have no opinion of Scott Skiles one way or another, personally, but this is what I do know.  Since George Karl the Bucks have had, Terry Porter, one playoff season with a 1st round knockout, Terry Stots, one playoff season with a 1st round knockout, and then who could forget Larry Krysthowiak…wah wah.

Is the talent different in each of the NBA seasons, Yes of course it is but here is one stat I will leave you with.  For 25 seasons as a coach George Karl missed the playoffs a total of 3 years, for Skiles he missed the playoffs a total of Seven years out of his 13 on the job in the NBA and Stan Van Gundy coached for 8 years and only missed the playoffs once and that was because he resigned.  As a Bucks fan I’m longing for the days of Larry Costello, Don Nelson and Del Harris.

But first you have to bring in the right guy, and maybe even more importantly you need the owner who will give the GM the keys to the car and say, make it work, bring in some guys who will make this a winner again and fill the BMO.

If that happens the Bucks will win again and I sure hope Stan Van Gundy is the coach that will bring out the winning ways of the former Senator and put Milwaukee back on the NBA map of respected teams.
