National group gives Wisconsin failing mark for disclosing gov't spending online

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - A national public interest group gives Wisconsin a grade of “F” for not disclosing enough of its government spending online – but the Walker administration says that’s about to change.

The U.S. Public Interest Research Group checked what all states have done to make information available about spending, contracts, economic development awards, and other grants.

Wisconsin is one of five states that flunked. The others were California, Colorado, North Dakota, and Hawaii. The research group said those Web sites were limited, and not easy to use.

Seven states were given “A’s,” including neighboring Illinois and Michigan.

The Walker administration has said it would start up a Web site called “Open Book” which will provide numerous details of state government spending and employee salaries.

Bruce Speight of the Wisconsin Public Interest Research Group says he’d love for “Open Book” to be a success – but he can’t predict it for sure, because he has not seen the details.

Officials expect the site to go up soon.
