Alex Richard's layup that hung on the rim and dropped through the net as the buzzer sounded gave the Kewaunee Storm it's second straight Division 3 state championship in a 60-58 thriller over East Troy at the Resch Center. After falling behind 17-6 after the first quarter, Kewaunee finally pulled in front 48-46 on a Kelsey Stangel basket with 5:27 to play. Stangel had a huge day, scoring 27 points with 10 rebounds. That set the stage for a pressure packed finish. Richard hit two free throws for a 54-50 lead with 2:21 left but East Troy answered with a three from Breanna Gaspervich. After a turnaround jumper by Richard pushed the lead back to 3, Gaspervich knocked down two free throws with 1:06 remaining. The Storm's Kelsey Stangel dropped two free throws with :47 left but Rachel Atchison drained a game tying 3 from the left wing :08 later. Kewaunee held the ball until calling timeout with:16 to play. With time running out, Jill Kleiman drove down the lane and found and open Richard for the game winning hoop as the Resch Center crowd exploded. East Troy was led by Atchison with 21 as they finished 26-2, reaching the title game a year after getting beat in the semifinals last season. As for the Storm, head coach Lynn Geier's team has played in three straight title games, falling to Altoona in 2011, beating Oostburg last season and coupling it with a thrilling victory today for their second straight, making it a huge day for Kewaunee County, sharing the Division 4 championship won earlier today by fellow Packerland Conference rival and friend Algoma.
